Just came on board and would like to connect directly with as many active members as possible. The 50 limit is just too slow for me.
This website is very exciting to me, eXRC who started my recovery 40 years ago

Ever since I told all of my ex fellow church members that I don't believe in Christianity, they're all acting like I'm in some sort of phase and that I'm not "humbling" myself to God. They act like I lowered myself and they are so much more great, wise, and holy than I am and that sort of thing about Christianity is wrong to me.

One of the most interesting aspects of modern Christianity, to me, is the assumption that Christian devotion somehow has come to imply a responsibility to police the morality of the rest of humanity. The Christianity founded in the First Century centered on personal piety and separation from the world. The Christianity of today centers on forcing unbelievers to conform to modern Christian interpretations of morality.

If Christianity would remain in the domain of personal piety, there would be no real problem. When Christians assert authority over non-believers, I believe they are entering a domain that would be anathama to both Jesus and Paul.

Mattie,
if you need biblical support for man's depravity and need for salvation (not that I agree with that), obviously there's other passages in the Bible that support that (knowing this as a former evanglical), such as Paul's letters?

any society can come up with reasons to prohibit certain activities like abortion or gay marriage if they can list valid reasons why their non-existence would be beneficial to the society's existence. here, of course, you're not appealing to God's authority, but the good of the community.

Where things stand

I used to try to convince myself and my friends of YEC, but I'm fed up with the endless circular arguments and with ignoring the mountains of evidence for an old universe.

This puts me in a bit of a pickle because in the past I have repeatedly spoken on the importance of the book of Genesis to Christian belief - it establishes the origin of sin, depravity of man and the need for salvation. If I give up on the validity of Genesis, do I need to give up on the rest of the Bible as well?

Rick Warren put it very well in an interview I watched the other day. If we accept evolution or reject creationism, then that opens up the door to allowing abortions and gay marriage etc. I believe that this is entirely true since now I can't think of a good reason to prohibit those things. All my old arguments against them crumble when I toss out a literal Genesis.

I am struggling to fit in with my old fundie pals with my new set of beliefs. Not sure where to go from here.

Prayer vs. Action

Several weeks ago, I found myself facing a perilous situation in which I was very frightened. Normally, my reaction in such circumstances is to immediately turn to God in prayer, and hope that things turn out for the best. However, in this particular situation I decided to very deliberately to… Continue
